XBOX – The Everyday Tactician (Case Study)

Can winning a virtual football league qualify you to coach a real professional football club? This XBOX – The Everyday Tactician (Case Study) unpacks how Xbox and McCann London turned Football Manager 2024 on Xbox Game Pass into an official recruitment portal for Bromley FC – driving a 190% surge in Xbox players, 1.5B impressions, a historic EFL promotion at Wembley, and two Grand Prix at Cannes Lions.

Background

While the Football Manager franchise has historically been synonymous with PC gaming, home consoles have rapidly emerged as the fastest-growing platform for the series. Locked in a fierce hardware and subscription battle against rival PlayStation, Xbox needed to establish Xbox Game Pass – its “Netflix for games” monthly subscription service – as the undisputed home for console football management with the launch of Football Manager 2024 (FM24).

Anchored in its overarching brand promise to “Power Your Dreams,” Xbox set out to empower virtual managers to unlock the real-world potential of their tactical football obsessions. The strategic brief carried two concrete objectives: significantly grow the total number of FM24 players on Xbox compared to Football Manager 2023 (FM23), and strengthen Xbox’s cultural association with global football fandom.

Creative Idea

Conceived in partnership with creative agency McCann London, The Everyday Tactician set out to prove the real-world power of gaming by turning FM24 on Xbox Game Pass into the world’s most unconventional sports recruitment test.

Teaming up with English Fifth Tier (National League) side Bromley Football Club, Xbox announced a legitimate, full-time paid vacancy for a first-team Support Performance Tactician. Unlike wealthy Premier League giants backed by massive analytics departments, lower-league clubs rarely have the budget for big-data scouting teams. Yet there was a catch to the application: traditional CVs were banned. The only way to apply for the job at Bromley FC was by completing an in-game achievement on FM24 via Xbox.

From thousands of applicants, Nathan Owolabi – a 23-year-old lifelong Football Manager obsessive who worked part-time as a tour guide at Wembley Stadium – won the role. Signing a five-month professional contract, Nathan transitioned from his bedroom gaming chair directly into Bromley FC’s real-life dugout.

Filmed for a three-part documentary series broadcast on TNT Sports – one of the UK’s largest sports networks – Nathan’s journey bridged the virtual and physical pitch. Overcoming initial skepticism within the locker room and his own quiet nature, Nathan applied his FM24 mastery to data-driven team selection, opposition scouting, and tactical simulations. His backroom contributions helped propel Bromley FC to the most successful campaign in its 130+ year history – culminating in a fairytale play-off final victory at Wembley Stadium (the very venue where Nathan used to give tours) and historic promotion to the English Football League (EFL).

Insights & Strategy

The strategic foundation of the XBOX – The Everyday Tactician (Case Study) tapped into a universal truth among football fans: every supporter in the stands secretly believes they could do a better tactical job than the actual manager – and the hyper-realistic database of Football Manager only fuels that conviction.

Rather than running standard game-launch trailers, the strategy united two powerful aspirations – a gamer’s dream of translating virtual mastery into the real world, and a football fan’s dream of working inside a professional club dugout:

  • An Unmistakable Call to Action: Built around the direct proposition – “Get a job as a tactician for Bromley FC just by playing Football Manager” – the campaign spoke directly to the core community of hardcore football and gaming enthusiasts.
  • Treating the Stunt Like a Real Job Search: Instead of framing the initiative as an ad campaign, Xbox and Bromley FC launched the role through authentic professional recruitment channels – posting the job listing across LinkedIn, Bromley FC’s official club website, and club social channels, alongside print and digital ads featuring encoded Football Manager data visualizations that only genuine FM tacticians could decipher.

Execution

Executed as a multi-month, real-time experiment spanning the 2023–2024 football season, every phase integrated Xbox gameplay with professional club operations:

  • The Viral Press Conference Launch: To kick off the FM24 launch on Xbox Game Pass, Bromley FC Manager Andy Woodman hosted an official press conference announcing the open Tactician role, looking directly down the lens to tell gamers, “It could be you.” The announcement video went viral on Bromley’s X (Twitter) feed, racking up 2 million views as hundreds of players tagged friends and declared “It’s my time.”
  • The Xbox Achievement Application Gate: No paper resumes were accepted. To unlock the application portal, candidates first had to play FM24 on Xbox and earn the “Championes” Xbox Achievement by guiding a team to a league title in-game, followed by submitting a 60-second video pitching Andy Woodman on why they deserved a seat on his coaching staff.
  • Earned Media Explosion & Final Interviews: The unorthodox hiring process immediately crossed from gaming blogs into mainstream sports journalism – earning headline coverage across BBC Sport, Sky News, The Athletic, Daily Mail, Hypebeast, and international press. Following a rigorous shortlisting process, Bromley FC’s coaching staff interviewed three finalists on site before signing Nathan Owolabi.
  • In-Season Tactical Integration & TNT Sports Documentary: Throughout the season, Nathan ran 230+ match simulations (five full virtual seasons) in FM24 to analyze upcoming opponents, with his tactical breakdowns published inside Bromley’s official matchday programmes. Meanwhile, cameras from TNT Sports documented every high and low behind the scenes – following Nathan all the way to the National League Play-Off Final at Wembley, where his penalty shootout analysis helped Bromley secure promotion to League Two.
